Kemsley Primary School, Artist in residence, July 2006

During July 2006 I was artist in residence at Kemsely Primary School, Sittingbourne, Kent during art week.  The school is only two years young and it is in need of some art work made by the pupils, to inject some life and soul into the school environment.  My mission was to produce a whole school weaving made with all of the children in the school, in addition to this we produced plaster hand casts, from each pupil-all done within one week.  The plaster hands were to line the walls of the school corridors, from reception year classrooms to year five.

This image shows the fabric weaving.  It is made with industrial netting and scraps of cloth.  During the residency i worked with every child in the school to produce individual weavings that were joined together to create a large scale, entire school weaving.  The finished weaving is approximately 8mx4m is to hang in the school hall.

This type of project was excellent to do in a primary school because each child could produce a weaving themselves and once the individual weavings were joined together it became huge! A brilliant, cheap, colourful, textural and inspiring project for young people.
