The Brook Theatre
Solo Show
Chatham, Kent
2001

This was my first solo show in a gallery space within a theatre.  I curated the show myself and exhibited older pieces with new works made specifically for the show.

The majority of the work was examining the theme of protection and safety.  In some of the newer pieces of work I began to look at Rochester Castle, which was near to my house, for inspiration.  I used elements of the "defensive" architecture found within castles and keeps to inspire some of my new pieces of work. Looking at the architecture of castles was the start of a new line of enquiry for my work as I became intrigued with the enormity and strength of castles and their simple but effective ways of defense.   Defense and protection is at the core of a castle's design which is why I started to use elements of their construction in my work.
